State of the State Gas Ban Proposals
Governor Hochul’s January 10, 2023, State of the State address contained concerning energy proposals including:
- No on‐site gas combustion by 2025 for smaller buildings;
- No on‐site gas combustion by 2028 for larger buildings;
- The prohibition of the sale of any new gas heating equipment by no later than 2030 for smaller buildings;
- The prohibition of the sale of any new gas heating equipment by no later than 2035 for larger buildings along with related gas systems for all buildings.
This would mean no natural gas in new construction starting in 2025, leaving National Fuel’s customers completely dependent on electric systems and mandated electric appliances starting in 2030 for existing buildings. The state should not limit consumer options without first demonstrating that there is a reliably working replacement in place. This is unsafe and unacceptable for Western New York.
Since the release of the Governor’s gas agenda, we have been hearing from family & friends throughout Western New York who have expressed concern with the dependence on a single energy system during extreme weather events in a region 40%‐55% colder than downstate. We share those concerns and believe a smarter, safer, and more responsible plan exists for New York State to achieve a lower‐carbon economy.
Western New Yorkers should express their opposition to gas bans with Governor Hochul and demand the members of the NYS Senate and Assembly reject her proposal and support a more realistic and responsible pathway forward without risking energy safety, reliability, and affordability.
